Runner needs help to reach fundraising goal
To the editor:
It was a good week for gaining support for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute research goals – and road training.
I have received many financial donations, and many names to add to the Dana Farber fundraising list that will be displayed at the Boston Marathon.
So far, 387 people have donated $1 each to my fundraising goal of getting 1,000 people to give $l each. Thanks to the generosity of a local donor, if we gain an additional 613 donations of $1, and also gain that many names to the Dana Farber list, that will put us $2,000 closer to my goal of $8,500 raised.
There are two fundraising sections to the Boston Marathon effort.
One is to gain 1,000 donations of $1 each. That amount will be matched by the local donor for a total of $2,000.
The other component of fundraising is to raise $6,500 from family members, relatives and neighborhood friends who knew my late mother, Elaine Stimson Warren.
The first week of fundraising on that section resulted in $l,244 raised. We received another $850 in pledges.
We also encourage people to send photographs that can be posted to the Dana Farber website that honors my mother. Please provide any stories or fond recollections you have of her.
The deadline for all contributions is Feb 28. Dana Farber encourages runners to turn in all checks and amounts at least one month prior to the April l8 race on Patriot’s Day in Boston.
To donate make checks payable to: Dana Farber Cancer Institute and mail to PO Box 1, Scarborough, ME 04070.

To the editor:
Our sincere appreciation to Scarborough Library patrons for their generous donation of beautiful blankets to South Portland Food Cupboard. It was perfect timing – frigid weather, warm blankets and grateful people. This has been a big help to our clients, along with the coats and sweaters others have donated.
The Food Cupboard is open every Thursday 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. We are located in the basement of St. John the Evangelist Church on Route 1 in South Portland. For more information, call 874-0379.
