Thankful for animal hospital’s compassion

To the editor:

Having to put a dog to sleep is one of the hardest decisions a responsible pet owner has to make. I would like to thank Pine Point Animal Hospital for its support, compassion and professionalism during such a hard time.

My husband and I were able to focus all our attention on saying goodbye to our beloved Martha, and all the struggles leading up to that point were eased by the understanding manner in which the staff and doctors helped us. We are fortunate to have Pine Point Animal Hospital in our community.

Support in election is much appreciated

To the editor:

I want to thank everyone involved in local government and politics for a great first-time experience in running for a local government office. As much as I have volunteered for political campaigns of various sizes and types, I was still not quite prepared for the experience of being a candidate instead of a supporter.

Thank you to Tody Justice, the best town clerk anywhere, for answering questions and making me feel comfortable that I was following all the rules appropriately and timely. Thank you to Tom Hall and all the town department heads who helped educate me on Scarborough history and the issues they are dealing with today. Thank you to the local press for their coverage, which did a lot to help introduce me to the public. Thank you to the Scarborough Republican Committee, Piper Shores, Higgins Beach group and Scarborough Chamber of Commerce for taking time to invite all of us to their candidate forums.

Thank you to Paul Austin, Marilyn Pena, Judy Shirk, Susan DeWitt Wilder and Emily Ward for organizing meet and greet events. Thank you to so many members of the public who took the time at the farmer’s market and at their doors to talk to me and tell me what issues were most important to them. And a huge thank you to those very special people who encouraged me to run and thanks most of all to my financial supporters who made it possible for me to do so.

And to all of you who want to see reasoned decisions coming from transparent and communicative local officials – this was my first, but won’t be my last campaign. Thank you.

Representative ready

for work that lies ahead

To the editor:

It is my honor and privilege to have been elected to serve as your state representative for District 128 – part of Scarborough.

They say the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. I am humbled and honored by your support. The wonderful thing about this journey is that I did not travel alone. Many of you supported me with your words of encouragement and time. And I am so very thankful.

The 2010 campaigns may be over, but the journey is just beginning. The next legislative session will be difficult as we face a $1 billion budget shortfall and an additional $9 billion dollars in unfunded liabilities. Tough decisions will need to be made. It is time for all of us to stay involved and keep our sleeves rolled up.

To better keep you informed, please visit my website, www.sirockiformainehouse.com. I also encourage you to join my e-mail distribution list for periodic updates, heather.sirocki@gmail.com.

Again, thank you so much for your support and for your continued involvement.

Heather Sirocki

Representative-elect

Scarborough District 128

Representative eager to tackle job

To the editor:

Becoming the representative-elect of Scarborough’s District 127 last Tuesday was gratifying and humbling. To put it simply, I am honored.

When the final results were in and it was clear the Republican party had taken majorities in both the House and Senate, as well as the governorship, I realized just how historic our collective achievement was. In fact, you could say Scarborough tipped the scales, in that if Heather Sirocki (District 128) and I had not both won, the balance of power in the House would have been tied.

Maine voters have entrusted our party with leadership at a critical juncture for our state.  We must not disappoint. I intend to do my part, first in seeking a meaningful committee assignment and then in working with Republicans and Democrats from all over the state to move Maine toward prosperity.

I would like to thank everyone who voted for me and even those of you who did not support me. Many a voter challenged me on issues as I stood on their doorstep during my campaign. Lively debate sharpens the mind. I would particularly like to thank my husband, Derek, who was my number one fan and without whose encouragement I never would have been successful.

I also thank my children who, in the beginning, were overwhelmingly excited I might be one of the people who passes laws in our state, but who sacrificed so I could be out campaigning and will sacrifice more in months to come.

Barry Lucier, my treasurer, was himself a treasure, taking over all of the bookkeeping and reporting for me. I appreciate all of my drivers, letter writers, sign-wavers and phone callers, as well, especially my mother and father-in-law, Diane and Ken Volk. A special thank you to Jen Jacobson, who prayed for me daily and frequently took care of my youngest child so I could knock on doors. Though there are too many others to mention, each contributed to the success of this campaign and will hopefully watch with pride as this historical exchange of power heralds a brighter future for the Maine we all care deeply about.

On another note, I am in the process of putting together a constituent e-mail contact list. If you would like to be included, please e-mail me at avolk@volkboxes.com. If you have ideas for legislation or would like to discuss state matters with me, you may reach me at 229-5091.

As Heather has said, “Our sleeves are rolled up.”  Off to work we go.
