Soccer team takes home championship

The Scarborough High School girls soccer team won the state championship Saturday in a 3-0 game against Bangor High School.

“(It) couldn’t have gone better for us,” said coach Mike Farley. “We got out to a very strong start possessing the ball and really put Bangor under pressure.”

He said halfway through the second half of the game Scarborough was awarded a corner kick and Emma Bagley headed home across from Sarah Little.

“We scored again right before the half when Cortney Hughes one-timed a rebound from a free kick by Tori Armishaw into the corner of the net for a 2-0 lead,” Farley said.

Farley said Bangor came back strong at the start of the second half and the Red Storm had to do its best to stay on the defensive. But just as the clock wound down, Scarborough regained the upper hand again.

“We got a break that really changed the game when Kaitlin Reynolds sent a cross into the box that found Sarah Little running onto it and she calmly put the ball into the net six minutes into the second half,” Farley said.

Farley said although the team has seen its share of playoffs, this season has proven to be one of the best.

“To see them put a season together where they only allow one goal on a penalty kick against 18 quality opponents is truly unbelievable,” Farley said.

Above all else, Farley attributed the team’s hard work and determination for getting them where they are today.

“I’m really proud of this team and they have accomplished something that we will remember for a long time and it couldn’t have happened to a better group of young ladies,” Farley said.

Bull Moose to debut books this weekend

So long, books on tape. Hello, books on paper.

This Saturday Bull Moose, the Maine-based music store, will open a new addition to its Scarborough branch, one that won’t sell music, but both new and used books.

Chad Verrill, who has been in charge of ordering books for the company, said it first conducted a “trial run” at a store in Bangor and after experiencing favorable results decided to offer something similar in Scarborough.

“There has definitely been a growing interest in books in recent years, especially among young adults with the ‘Twilight’ saga,” Verrill said.
Although vampire novels aren’t the only books flying off shelves these days, Bibles are too.

“We’ve sold a wide range of books at the Bangor store. Everything from kids’ books, to graphic novels and even Bibles,” Verrill said.
This Saturday the store will hold a grand reopening 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. at the store located at 456 Payne Road.
