Town Council could use some new, fresh faces

To the editor:

I am writing in support of Kerry Corthell and Iver Carlsen for election to the Scarborough Town Council.

I have had the opportunity to meet these two exceptional candidates and find them to be great listeners and thinkers who I believe will bring new perspectives to town government. Kerry and Iver reach out to people and ask them what they feel are issues the council should focus on. They made an effort to come to Pine Point to hear from more than 30 neighbors about the problems we’ve faced during the years by a town government that has refused to listen to people.  I am convinced they will do an excellent job because of their qualities and character.

I also believe it is important to remind people of the Pine Point issues because the closing of our public road to the beach and a recent land swap was opposed by hundreds of people all over town. That is why last year’s incumbent, Richard Sullivan, (who is running again) was so soundly defeated by voters.

I ask the voters of Scarborough to “remember Pine Point,” which was a symbol of all that was wrong with local government and replace those who were part of the problem with Corthell and Carlsen, who I believe will be part of the solution.

Vote for change to have ‘transparent government’

To the editor:

I urge voters to bring more new faces to the Scarborough Town Council. I’m a strong advocate of recycling – except when we’re talking about town councilors. Consequently, Kerry Corthell and Iver Carlsen are going to receive my votes.

If you want a more transparent town government then vote for people who listen well, do their research and communicate effectively. I assure you Iver Carlsen and Kerry Corthell are those people.

I have faith in their thoughtfulness, experience, characters and ability to perform in a challenging job.

If you sincerely want change in town government, vote for it and help sustain it. Please.

Candidate was right to apologize to constituents

To the editor:

It is refreshing to learn that one of our public servants has not only apologized for his actions but has also accepted responsibility for his actions.

This same public servant has even asked for forgiveness. In the same letter he acknowledges that he has learned from his mistake and he hopes to continue serving the public.

His willingness to accept responsibility is refreshing.

Sean Flaherty, you have our vote!

Flaherty’s leadership earned him ‘respect’

To the editor:

I have had the privilege of knowing Sean Flaherty and his family for more than 10 years. Sean was raised in Scarborough with strong family values. His inclusive leadership as our representative reflects his passionate commitment for Scarborough and all of its residents.  Sean has earned my trust and respect during the years. His eagerness to learn and take accountability for his actions have reinforced my trust and respect for Sean.

I hope you will join me in supporting Sean’s re-election so he can continue fighting for Scarborough while helping to ensure responsible budgeting, support for small business and sustainable energy for Maine’s future.

Candidate has the ‘know how’ to be in office

To the editor:

I am writing in support of Amy Volk for the Legislature.

During the past few years I have come to know Amy and her family and could not think of a better person to represent Scarborough in Augusta. She has four children, runs a family business and has time to volunteer for local nonprofit organizations.

Amy has the experience and know how to help solve the financial crisis Maine is facing. Amy understands the difficulties of running a small business in Maine and knows what needs to be done to help businesses. I urge you to vote for Amy Volk for House District 127.

Volk has ‘sincerity’ and

‘passion’ in what she does

To the editor:

Our children are our future. I think most of us can agree on that.  Yet, how is our future looking for Maine if students are not thriving with these changing times? Maine could improve its ranking for assessment scores throughout the country.  Thousands of children are not even driven to graduate from high school let alone attend college in Maine. We need a change, and fast.

Amy Volk, who is running for House District 127, is just the person who can bring a change for Maine.

Knowing Amy personally over the years has been a pleasure. She, along with her husband, Derek, have raised four amazing children, each one nurturing their own talents and skills while remaining strong in their focus on education and their future. Amy has the experience. Her involvement in the community, talking with and listening to others and their ideas have given her the foundation to reform our educational system while containing costs.

It’s because of her beliefs, sincerity, passion and desire for a better way of life for all of us that Amy Volk has our vote. Please visit her website at www.amyvolkforhouse.com to learn about her views on jobs, education, health care, taxation and to also become inspired.

Candidates have know-how for Council seats

To the editor:

I am writing in support of Richard Sullivan and Kerry Corthell’s election to the Scarborough Town Council.

During Mr. Sullivan’s previous service on the Council it was apparent he was an attentive listener – not only of complicated issues but also of routine issues.

Mr. Sullivan is a man of few words, but he made sure he considered each issue carefully, fairly and objectively. Because of his previous service to the town, Mr. Sullivan will need little time to face difficult issues in town. He knows how town government works and knows Town Council procedures. I am confident Mr. Sullivan will continue to serve Scarborough residents with the same objectivity and care he did in the past. I know he will work diligently to make sure the needs of our town are met in a fair and open manner.

I also urge voters to support Kerry Corthell’s election. I first met Ms. Corthell about three months ago when I addressed the Town Council on a particular issue.

Subsequent to that meeting, Ms. Corthell reached out to me to learn more about that issue. She not only continues to keep herself informed but she provides me with regular updates.

I came to realize this is how Ms. Corthell approaches all matters that come to her attention. She listens attentively and researches and studies each issue as deeply as she can. Not only has Ms. Corthell volunteered to serve on the charter committee, she also regularly attends Town Council and other town meetings. If she cannot attend in person, Ms. Corthell watches the meeting on the Town’s website or obtains a copy of the minutes. Even though this will be her first time on the Council, Ms. Corthell is so well versed on town issues I am confident she will be ready to assume a full and active role on the Council with little delay.

Patience during library renovations appreciated

To the editor:

The Scarborough Public Library Board of Trustees would like to thank our users and the people of Scarborough for your patience while we expand and improve the safety of the parking lot. This project was planned to increase available parking and create a safer traffic flow, including well-marked pedestrian access and a new drop-off zone.

The work required removing the trees along Quentin Drive to provide space and drainage for the expanded lot. Some trees were re-planted at other locations on the property and new trees will also be planted in the parking area as part of the project.

The nature of the work also required the library to close for a week to complete repairs to entry ways. We understand this has caused some inconvenience.

We would also like to thank Risbara Brothers for its excellent and expedient work on the project to date.

If anyone has any questions about the project, feel free to call the library at 883-4723. We encourage everyone to come to the library in coming weeks to see the final result of the work and again, thank you for your patience and support.
