Glen Alan Downs
Glen Alan Downs, 70, died July 2, 2010, at a Bangor hospital following complications discovered after a vehicle accident in Cutler.
Mr. Downs was born Nov. 26, 1939, the last child of Emma and Lawrence Downs of Scarborough. He was born and raised in Scarborough, learning the call of the ocean through clamming and lobster fishing. He then joined the Navy.
After leaving duty he returned to Scarborough and married Donna Moffitt and raised five children, teaching them to help neighbors, friends and strangers.
He enjoyed talking to children and old-timers alike, spinning yarns and talking about town history. Mr. Downs was a longtime member of Engine 4 and the Scarborough Shellfish Conservation Committee. In the mid-1990s, he and his wife purchased land in Cutler. They worked a 100-acre parcel and built a log cabin while still digging clams.
Mr. Downs is survived by five children, Tim Downs of Scarborough, Tammy Kelley and husband, Brian, of Buxton, Terry Bennett and husband, Glenn, of Scarborough, Tracy Pinkham of Lewiston and Stephen Perry; his sisters, Joyce Lyons, Alyson Eisinberger and Jean Morris; sister-in-law Marie Downs; five grandkids and 19 nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements were by Hobbs Funeral Home, Scarborough.
George W. Lagerstrom
George W. Lagerstrom, 85, died July 1, 2010 at Maine Medical Center with his four children by his side after a brief illness.
Born in Feb. 24, 1925, in Dedham Mass. He was the middle child of Gustav and Gertrude (Christianson) Lagerstrom. He spent his childhood in Needham.
After graduating high school he enlisted in the Army where he served in the South Pacific during World War II. He was seriously wounded in battle June 8, 1944. He spent 18 months in the hospital recovering from his injuries. He was a Purple Heart veteran and was proud of his country and the time he spent in battle protecting its freedom.
After the war, he went to Tilton Prep School and later University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He was active in church groups and spent summers in Ocean Park. It was there that he met his first wife, Anne Booth. Together they raised four children in Scarborough.
Mr. Lagerstrom worked for 26 years at the post office in Portland where he made many friends. He also owned and operated a landscaping business, Lagerstrom and Sons. He passed on his love of plants to his three sons. They worked together for many years.
Mr. Lagerstrom retired from the postal service in 1983. He spent winters in Florida and summers with his children and grandchildren in Camp Ellis and Ocean Park. He loved motorcycles and watching movies with his friend Norman Means.
In his early retirement he married Patricia Welch and enjoyed every minute of his time with her and her three daughters.
Mr. Lagerstrom loved Florida and especially his best friend Ernie King.
Mr. Lagerstrom was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Trudy Lagerstrom; brother, John Lagerstrom and stepdaughter, Megan Welch. He is survived by sons, George Lagerstrom Jr. and his girlfriend, Janet Eastman, Carl H. Lagerstrom and his two children, Dannah and Hans, Eric Lagerstrom, his wife, Shari, and sons Spencer and Owen, all of Saco; daughter, Kristi Lagerstrom Flaherty, husband Mark and three children Eddie, Michael and Molly, of Portland. He is also survived by his first wife, Anne Lagerstrom of Portland, his second wife Patricia Welch of Florida and stepdaughters Cheryl Welch and Nina Welch of Winter Haven, Fla.
Arrangements were by Cote Funeral Home, Saco.
