Richard Carter Frederick

Richard Carter Frederick, 90, died June 4 at his Fort Myers, Fla., residence. He was born Nov. 5, 1919, at the home of George and Della Carter Frederick, on Ferry Road.

As a young boy, he caddied at the Prouts Neck Country Club, a course his father designed. He was a graduate of Scarborough High School, class of 1937. As a young man, he was a Cushman Bakery route salesman in Arundel. He married Dorothy Johnson of South Portland. He later joined Houdi Engineering in Buffalo, N.Y., as plant inspector.

He received his draft notice and enlisted in the Army Air Corps in December 1943, and qualified for pilot cadet training at San Antonio, Texas. A major illness during training ended his ambitions to become a military pilot. He was transferred to Will Rogers Air Base in Oklahoma, where he completed his three-year enlistment, and was discharged at Camp Chaffee, Ark., March 1946.

He resumed his life-long career in Oklahoma City with Brown Co. and Georgia Pacific and rose to the position of regional sales and marketing manager in New York City. He retired in 1979 after 28 years of service.

He was predeceased by his wife, Juanita Rohde Frederick; wife, Jo Alberty Frederick (1995); step-daughter, Ann Thibault; five brothers, Walter, Willard, George, Phillip and Donald and a sister, Pauline Harrison.

He is survived by his sister Jean Hart of Scarborough; daughter, Cheryl (Frank) Schneider of Asheville, N.C.; step-children, John (Ruth) Rohde of Fort Myers; Nora Dietz of Medina, Ohio; Patricia Vasquez of Malden, Mass.; Janice (Ray) Hatton of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and Betty (Larry) Waggoner of Claremore, Okla.; 19 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

An enthusiastic fisherman and boater, Mr. Frederick enjoyed his lobster boat in Maine during his early years, to the delight of his family who thoroughly enjoyed his lobster feasts. In later years he piloted another fishing boat on a 21-day adventure from Maine to Florida with his step-son and sons-in-law. At age 85, he purchased a trawler, which he enjoyed for several years in the waters around Fort Myers.

Memorial Services will be 10 a.m., Saturday, June 19 at Hobbs Funeral Home, Route 1, Scarborough, with visitation, 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., today. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that donations he made to Hope Hospice, 2430 Diplomat Parkway, Cape Coral, FL, 33909, or to a favorite charity.
