Obituary: George E. Lekousi (Printed April 9, 2010)
He was born Aug. 18, 1918 in Portland to Eustace and Helen Lekousi. He grew up in the west end of the city near Union Station, one of six children. He attended Portland High School and later served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He worked at the family bakery, Lekousi’s Bakery, for many years. A baker and salesperson, George helped build the business through direct sales to restaurants and the food industry in southern and central coastal areas of the state.
In the 1970s, he and his brother, Andrew Lekousi, opened the Westfield Inn, which Mr. Lekousi managed for nearly 20 years with the adjoining Quick Lunch Cafe.
Lekousi was a life member of the VFW and Masons. He was also a longtime member of the Order of AHEPA, a Greek-American fraternal organization, and the Kora Shriners.
He enjoyed spending time with his two grandchildren and supporting their activities.
Mr. Lekousi is survived by his wife, Helen Ladakakos Lekousi, of Scarborough; brother and sister-in-law, Arthur and Freda Lekousi of Westbrook; son-in-law and daughter, Christos and Mary Papoutsy of New Hampshire; son, Louis Lekousi; two grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Laurie Lekousi, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements were by Hobbs Funeral Home, South Portland.
