Letter: Public owed disclosure (Printed March 19, 2010)

To the editor:

I recently read the article by David Harry “Resignation suggested, principal says” (Feb. 26). It states Pat Conant, Scarborough High School principal, will not be receiving a new contract for the position she currently holds. She has been in this position since 2006, apparently receiving annual renewal contracts. It also states she has no idea why she is not receiving another contract for this position. I do not know Conant so have no idea what the circumstances are in this case.

As a resident and taxpayer of Scarborough for many years, I have questions and concerns as to why this individual has not been given reason for and an opportunity to defend herself against this measure if she desires. This would apply to any position not just this one particular case as it has always been my belief for people involved in working for taxpayers or are elected by taxpayers. I see this as being public information as to circumstances why she is not receiving another contract. I can’t believe that the people involved would care to lose their jobs without an explanation. School Superintendent David Doyle and Board of Education Chairman Brian Dell’Olio should be accountable for their positions on decisions they choose to make.

It may be written that no reason for dismissal is necessary. If this is so, then I feel this matter should be reviewed and perhaps the guidelines for dismissal rewritten. I also feel that the two gentlemen mentioned should step forward and tell residents why this is happening. This appears to be a continuation of what is happening in government where people in positions are doing what they feel like rather than what their constituents may want.

I have been in contact with the author of this article and he verified that the above-mentioned gentlemen did not want to talk about the issue concerning dismissal and lack of a new contract. Sounds very convenient to me.
