News Brief: Haiti relief effort at swim meet (Printed Jan. 22, 2010)
A swim meet in Westbrook provided a good pool of contributions for a local boy seeking to help earthquake victims in Haiti.
Brimwin Peabody, 7, a first-grader at Pleasant Hill Elementary School and a swimmer with the Coastal Maine Aquatics Swim Club in Cape Elizabeth, spent his time between races seeking donations for the American Red Cross, said his mother, Carrie Wood Peabody.
Brimwin raised $120.75 on Sunday while swimming in a two-day swim meet in Westbrook, she said.
He swam in six races in two days and brought in a sign and collection box Sunday morning. At the conclusion of the first session Sunday morning, Brimwin was prepared to leave with donations he had collected, Peabody said.
Instead, he was urged to wait and collect donations from swimmers and parents arriving for the second session. Peabody said the Westbrook Seals swim club, hosts of the meet, also contributed to the cause.
Brimwin turned in the donations Tuesday at the American Red Cross office in Portland, Peabody said.
