The Old Orchard Beach man accused of stealing an automated teller machine and leading police on a chase to Prout’s Neck last November was indicted last Friday by a Cumberland County grand jury on multiple charges related to the theft and chase.
Late in the evening on Nov. 29, Andrews used a stolen Ford F-250 truck to drag an ATM from the Eight Corners Market on Mussey Road, according to a statement from Scarborough Police Officer John Gill.
Witnesses who heard the noise from the breaking door reported seeing the pickup truck with the ATM in the back flee the scene and head east on Gorham Road, Gil said.
Police officers stopped Andrews on Gorham Road near the Scarborough Public Library. As an officer approached the truck, Andrews backed up and struck the front end of the police cruiser before driving away, according to affidavits on file at Cumberland County Superior Court in Portland.
A chase where Andrews is estimated to have driven as fast as 100 mph ensued along Black Point Road toward Prout’s Neck. The officer chasing Andrews in the damaged cruiser used a spotlight on the side of the car because the headlights were broken when the cruiser was struck, according to the affidavits.
Andrews eventually struck a guardrail near the Prout’s Neck Yacht Club and continued to flee on foot, according to the court documents. He was discovered hiding, partially submerged, when officers saw his legs extending from under a rock on the beach.
The truck Andrews allegedly drove had been reported stolen from Rowe Ford in Auburn. The keys to the truck were stored in a lockbox attached to a window on the truck and the thief drilled a hole in the lockbox to get them. Affidavits say license plates on the truck were stolen from a contractor’s van in Turner.
Sanford Police Chief Thomas Connolly said Andrews is also a person of interest in an attempted burglary at a convenience store in Springvale earlier in the evening on Nov. 29.
Andrews has an extensive history of convictions for burglary, forgery and drug possession charges dating back to 2000, according to court records.
