The Marsh (Aug. 7, 2009)

Welcome to The Marsh, your place to see all the sports highlights during the past week. Even though it seems summer just arrived, it seems many sports programs are headed into the homestretch and getting ready to begin fall sports. Did someone say, “Fall?”

Keep The Marsh full of bold faced names by sending your sports highlights to Ward Peck at news@scarboroughleader.com or at 282-4337 ext. 221.

If a Scarborough athlete kicks it, hits it, pins it, throws it, out runs or out swims it, he wants to know. Tell him to “Throw it in The Marsh.”

Chloe Gorey pitched all 6 innings in Scarborough 9-10 All-Star’s 9-8 comeback win Tuesday over Auburn. Thanks to some great hitting, aggressive base running and terrific defense the team move on to the semi-final vs. Lincoln County. We’ll have the results next week.

Robby Gravel, an incoming senior at Scarborough High School and one of Coastal Maine Aquatic’s team captains finished third and his brother Kip Gravel placed fourth for the 15-year-old and older Men’s category at Aquatic Centre in Saint John, New Brunswick. The Gravels were among 35 athletes of all ages who traveled across the border to represent Coastal Maine Aquatics in pursuit of best times, fast swimming, and lots of fun and returned to Maine as state champions once again.

The annual summer state championship, held in Canada because Maine does not have a 50-meter pool, included events from 50-meters all the way up to swimming’s longest event, the 1,500-meter freestyle. Coastal Maine Aquatic swimmers recorded more than 200 personal best times en route to the fist place finish for the men and a strong runner-up finish for the women.

In addition to state titles, local athletes set nine new state records. The foursome of Marcus Cloutier, Jerry Gravel, Trebor Lawton, and Evan Long broke the record in each of the five relay events offered for the 13-14-year-old age group. Meanwhile, the 9-10-year-old boy’s team of Rhyan Cloutier, Andrew Herrera, Kyle Long, and Marshall Peterson broke all three relay records in the 9-10-year-old age group.
