Letter: Thanks for successful Chowder Challenge (Aug. 7, 2009)

To the editor:

The Blue Point Congregational Church, UCC (BPCC) located at 236 Pine Point Road in Scarborough would like to thank the Scarborough community for their support during the weekend of May 30.

The second annual Blue Point Chowder Challenge was held on Saturday, May 30. This challenge is becoming a popular event in which local individuals and community groups make and enter their own special chowders to be judged by the “people” and by a panel of professional judges: Joe Brennan, executive chef of the Cumberland Club, David Corbeau, Scarborough’s Shellfish Warden  and Harbormaster and Paul Lesperance of Josephs by the Sea. The judges choice winner was Eric Greenleaf, from the Scarborough Police Dept. with his delicious Seafood Chowder and the people’s choice winner was Mary Rollo of Project G.R.A.C.E. with her special 7 Fish Chowder. 25 percent of the proceeds from this successful event have been donated to the good works of Project G.R.A.C.E.

Sunday, May 31 BPCC hosted an ecumenical Pentecost Festival. This event was the inspiration of Nancy Landsman, BPCC organist and choir director, who invited area churches to join in an evening of special spirit filled music and inspirational readings. A special thank you to the clergy and choir members from the participating Churches: Scarborough Free Baptist, Saint Maximilian Kolbe, Coastal Community and West Scarborough Methodist. The good will offering collected during the service has also been donated to Scarborough’s Project G.R.A.C.E.
