The Marsh (July 31, 2009)
Welcome one and all to the Marsh. Though we come into the dog days of the summer months, there are still plenty of sports still happening.
Congratulations to the Scarborough 9-10 All-Star softball team as they won the District 6 championship by defeating South Portland 3-0 in the championship game. The game was a 0-0 tie going into the sixth inning when Chloe Gorey hit a single and later scored on an errant throw from the pitcher. The team also received timely hitting from Abbie Murrell, Emily Hanson and aggressive baserunning by Sarah Linehan. Pitcher Lilly Volk struck out 14 batters and allowed only 1 hit to get her fifth win of the tournament.
The team plays against Auburn today in the Maine State Championship in Ellsworth. Good luck team!
The Scarborough 13-Year Old All-Stars a.k.a the Southern Maine Warriors move on to the New England Regional Tournament after winning the Maine State Championship in Farmington. To get to the regional tournament, the team defeated tournament host team Franklin County 8-1. Ben Greenburg allowed two hits in six innings pitched and Will D’Agostino closed the game in the seventh inning. Ryan Bailer and Nick Whitten led the team in hitting with two hits each, and Whitten was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. The regional tournament will be held in Leominster, Mass. Aug. 6 to 12. Good job Warriors!
The Southern Maine Flame U14 team won yet another tournament last weekend in Arlington, defeating the New England Brawl 6-0. The Flame were led by softball standouts Mo Hannan, Abby Rutt, Erin Giles and Mariah Volk.
The Southern Maine Flame U16 team finished second out of 20 teams in the Nor’easter Tournament in Laconia, N.H. Alana Peoples went errorless throughout the weekend tournament.
In Junior American Legion baseball, Joe Viola pitched a no-hitter, including 10 strikeouts last week against Cumberland. Ben Wessel hat two hits and two RBI’s, while Dan Murphy, Viola and John Passarelli each had one RBI. Well done everybody!
It’s with a heavy heart that I tell you that this is my last week working at the Scarborough Leader. I have had a great time this past year, specifically the last few months working on the area sports. I would like to thank all of the athletes, coaches and parents I have spoken with in these past few months, I appreciate you all taking the time out of your busy schedules to talk with me, and I really appreciate it.
I would also like to thank all of the editors and writing staff at the Leader and its sister papers for letting me live the dream and cover sports in the area. Each one of you has helped me in some way to become a better writer and reporter.
The good news is the Marsh will continue, and all sports news can be sent to our new editor, Ward Peck at news@scarboroughleader.com or at 282-4337 ext. 221.
Don’t cry for me Scarborough, (unless you really want to) as I have been lucky enough to land another sports writing job at a local daily newspaper, so you have not heard the last from Ol’ Danger Dave.
Again, thank you Scarborough for letting me cover and write about the everyday events of this great town.
