The Marsh (July 17, 2009)

Hello everyone, and welcome back to the Marsh. We have nice weather outside, which means teams in Scarborough were finally allowed to play some games this week.

Congrats to the U14 Southern Maine Flame as they won the New England ASA Regional Tournament last weekend. The Flame went 5-0 on the weekend, with Mo Hannan pitching the semifinal game and Erin Giles pitching the championship game. Mariah Volk and Abby Rutt also contributed in the win.

This marks the second time in three years that the team has won the regionals. Team President Derek Volk had the best words for the win.

“Doing it once is a tremendous accomplishment, but doing it twice is just awesome,” he said.

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

The U16 Southern Maine Flame also had success, as they finished in second place at the Eric Whitten Tournament in South Portland. The U18 Southern Maine Flame also finished in second out of 32 teams in a tournament in Massachusetts. Well done, Flame!

The U10 Girls All-Stars laid the smack down on Yarmouth on Monday, winning by a score of 17-3. Lilly Volk and Abbie Murrell combined for the team’s third straight no-hitter of the season. Among the players who knocked in runs during the game were Sarah Linehan, Chloe Griffin, Erin Ryan and Kaleigh Scoville. The team will face off against Falmouth tomorrow at Wainwright Field in the semi-finals.

The Libby-Mitchell Post 76 baseball team is enjoying a 12-3 record as of press time, which included a nice 11-3 win over Andrews on Tuesday. Jake Rutt (who is featured in the Sports Spotlight this week) had two home runs in the win, and Cape Elizabeth product Ryan Boyington had seven strikeouts.

Pat on the back to recent Springfield College graduate Mike Griffin, who ran in both cross-country and track for the Pride. Griffin was recently named to the ESPN Magazine Academic All-American Team, which means on top of his running skills, he was very skilled in the classroom as well. Great job Mike, and much credit, as I was only able to master one of the two during my college football days at Plymouth State University (you can probably guess which one I was better at).

Last, but certainly not least, congratulations to Maine Representative Sean Flaherty, who was named head coach for the Scarborough High School swim team. No doubt Flaherty, a former swim star at Scarborough, will now have a tough schedule on his hands when swim season comes around between swim meets and legislative meetings in Augusta. Good luck Sean!

If you don’t have any plans for tomorrow, Danger Dave returns at the Tranch Wrestling Tournament at Scarborough High School from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. I will do my best to survive a couple of grueling rounds on the mat, which – if nothing else – will surely be comical. Come on down and wish me luck if you get a chance, I will certainly need it!

Have a great and safe weekend everyone, and thanks again for reading!
