Letter: Speeders, beware (July 17, 2009)

Is it the wild life that get run down because of a driver going 45 mph in a 25 mph zone who would have had to stop if a sign had been there? Is it someone’s pet that darted out in front of a speeder? How about someone’s child just learning to ride a bike? A teen learning to drive who doesn’t have all the skills to avoid someone going way too fast because there’s no need to stop? How about the older couple out with their dog for a walk at dusk who may not hear or see as well as they once did, stepping away from the side of the road just as another car comes flying by, again because there was no need to stop?
I have seen some of these situations, thankfully with no fatalities, but is that what it takes to get stop signs at the intersection of Nonesuch Cove Road, Claypits Road and Horseshoe Drive. I live on the corner of this intersection and have asked the “appropriate” individuals at Scarborough Police Department and was told the intersection “doesn’t warrant it.”
I know stop signs don’t save lives but they might and I say might slow some people down. I’ve complained about speeders so they put their “robot cop” down there to say “you are going too fast.” I know that scared them!
