Scarborough man arrested for robbery
Old Orchard Beach police arrested a Scarborough man for robbery early Tuesday.
Deputy Police Chief Keith Babin said Kyle Lewis, 22, was arrested after he allegedly approached a 17-year-old male from Salem, N.H., who was walking on East Grand Avenue near Brown Street. He said Lewis approached the teen and his friend, asked if they had change for a $20 bill, then punched the male and took his wallet.
A patrol officer driving in the area observed the disturbance at an intersection and saw the suspect kicking the teen in the head. Lewis ran from police but was apprehended nearby, Babin said.
Babin said the teen sustained minor injuries but was not transported to the hospital by rescue crews. Lewis was charged with robbery and is being held on $10,000 bail at York County Jail, he said.
Teens involved in train incident
Two Scarborough teens were injured when their car was hit by an Amtrak train in the Ocean Park section of Old Orchard Beach on July 4.
Deputy Police Chief Keith Babin said a 1996 Ford driven by 18-year-old Kristopher Gergler was hit by the train on Temple Avenue at 1:44 a.m. The car rolled over into a ditch and was totaled. Gergler and his 17-year-old passenger were transported to Maine Medical Center with possible shoulder and collarbone injuries, he said.
Babin said police continue to investigate the cause of the accident, which occurred where a gate and flashing lights indicate a train approaching. He said the weather was foggy at the time of the accident.
