The Marsh (July 3, 2009)
Hello everyone, welcome back to the Marsh. I’m taking an early Thanksgiving this year, because I’m thankful that I was actually able to cover some games with this horrible weather we’ve been cursed with this week.
Immediate congratulations are in order to the Scarborough High School softball team, capping off an amazing 19-1 season by beating the Skowhegan Indians 3-1 for the Maine Class A State Championship June 24 in Brewer. The team suffered through three cancellations before finally heading up I-95 for the three-hour drive to Brewer. Highlights from the game would have to include stellar defensive plays by both Brianna Mancuso and Catie Funk. Mancuso made a terrific play on a ground ball hit up the middle of the field, but was able to grab it and throw the runner out. Funk made a great diving catch on a line drive to help seal the team’s victory.
The win marks the team’s second title in three years. Congrats, ladies, its been fun watching your games this year.
Speaking of driving to Brewer, a special shout-out must be given to the kind State Trooper who let me off for speeding on my way to the game on I-95. Thank you, sir. I will never badmouth cops again.
In case you didn’t know it, American Legion baseball has already begun. The Libby-Mitchell Jr. Legion team already has a 5-0 record thanks to wins against Coastal Athletics and Gray-New Gloucester. In the Coastal Athletics game, pitcher Ryan Mancini struck out six batters, while Sam St. Germain and Cam Brown each had two runs batted in.
In the New-Gloucester game, Peter Krahe pitched three innings in relief and only gave up one run, while Ben Wessel and John Gonzalez each hit a triple.
Pats on the back to the Scarborough Little League U-10 softball all-stars, as they beat Windham in their first tournament game.
In their latest win, the Libby-Mitchell Sr. Legion baseball team defeated First Title of Maine 14-9 on Tuesday. The game was highlighted by home runs from Chris Bernard, who hit a shot over the scoreboard at Larry Mahaney Diamond, and Bonny Eagle product Lincoln Sanborn, who hit a three-run homer over the left field wall.
Also congrats to the Southern Maine Flame U-14 team, who won the 2009 ASA State Championship game in Fairfield. Great job!
Last, but certainly not least, congratulations to Lisa Letourneau and Abby Chick. The mother-daughter combination recently completed the Trek Across Maine, a 180-mile bike ride, which raises money for the American Lung Association. For those keeping score, that’s 178 miles more than I can ride on my bike before I pass out from exhaustion.
The duo was able to raise $1,500 by themselves this year, while the event brought in a total of $1.6 million! Great job ladies, its always cool when you can do something fun and help out a good cause all at the same time. You can read our previous story on Letourneau and Chick and the Trek Across Maine on our blog, blog.scarboroughleader.com (under the date April 10).
That’s it for this week sports fans. Please cross your fingers for good weather this week, because this guy needs sports games to happen around here.
