Letter: Thank you much (July 3, 2009)

Editor:

On behalf of the Friends of the Scarborough Library, I would like to thank the many members of the community who helped make our annual book sale the most successful ever. The friends raised more than $13,000 during the sale, and we are very grateful for the generosity of people who donated books for sale and purchased books to read.

Proceeds of the book sale enable us to fund the purchase of books for the library’s adult and children’s collections. We also hold programs that are free and open to the public. This past winter, more than 200 children enjoyed the Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers’ production of “The Legend of the Banana Kid.” We are now preparing to host writer Colin Woodard, author of “The Lobster Coast,” for a Scarborough Reads program Sept. 26.

The friends appreciate the help of our corporate sponsors. One Stop Party Shoppe provided tables and tents that allowed us to display more than 26,000 donated books, DVDs, and videos. The Scarborough Hannaford and Sam’s stores donated supplies that enabled us to sort and sell books.

I also want to add a very special thanks to the Scarborough Public Works Department, where we store and sort books throughout the year. They not only supplies us with space to do so, but delivers the books to the library for the actual sale.
