The Marsh (June 26, 2009)

Welcome back once again to the Marsh. I hope everyone has been enjoying the lovely weather we have had this past week, because one team that probably isn’t is the Scarborough High School softball team. The Red Storm have been anxiously awaiting the Maine Class A State Championship game, their second title game in the past three years.

A couple of outstanding performances occurred for the team during the Maine Class A Western Maine Finals against South Portland High School. Freshman Maureen “Mo” Hannan allowed only one hit with 10 strikeouts. Second baseman Reegan Brackett made an outstanding diving catch off of South Portland right fielder Danielle DiBiase in the sixth inning. Also, third baseman Catie Funk caught a line drive hit directly to her in the seventh inning. It was a good thing, too, because if she hadn’t she would still have the imprint of softball stitches on her head right now.

Congratulations on a fantastic season go out to the Scarborough High School baseball team, who had their season cut short in the Maine Class A Western Maine Finals last week by the Deering Rams, who won the state championship last Saturday.

The Red Storm hung tough with the Rams for four innings before Deering put on a hitting display in the fifth inning. Highlights of the game would have to be the two home runs hit by catcher Jacob Rutt, one of which still hasn’t landed.

The highlight of the game though would have to be pitcher Chris Bernard’s steal of home plate. There’s no question it’s the most exciting play in the game and Bernard did a great job of timing Deering pitcher Taylor Candage’s delivery, and an even better job of sliding underneath catcher Marc Ouimet’s legs to touch the plate.

Even though he was roughed up in the game, Bernard has shown his stuff this year, not only as a pitcher, but as a hitter and base stealer as well. The University of Maine baseball team ought to be excited about him coming to their school.

Congratulations must go out to the Amato’s team in Scarborough Girls Little League, as they took home the championship against Volk Packaging last week. This is the team’s second consecutive championship.

To get to the championship, Volk Packaging defeated Jones and Warren 2-1 in the semi-finals in what an inside source has told me was “one of the best little league softball games most of the attendees had ever seen.” Lilly Volk pitched an outstanding game for Volk Packaging, throwing all seven innings and only giving up one hit. In a week of exciting highlights, Jones and Warren player Sarah Murphy successfully stole home plate on a delayed steal.

The Under 10-years old Southern Maine Flame team won the 2009 Southern Maine Diamond Challenge in Scarborough last weekend. Members of the team include: Megan Nicholson, Manager Derek Volk, Abbie Murrell, Kirsten Lebreux, Coach Paul Murrell, Tori Hale, Coach Steve “Not of Three Amigos Fame” Martin, Kaleigh Scoville, Coach Al Lebreux, Erin Ryan, Erin Martin, Courtney Jones, Hannah Ricker, Lilly Volk, Chloe Gorey and Tess Haller. Good job, guys!

That’s it for this week folks. Come back next week when I give my recipe for a delicious guacamole dip. Just kidding! See you all next week, same Marsh time, same Marsh channel.
