The Marsh (June 19, 2009)

Hello again, Scarborough sports fans, welcome back to the Marsh. Yet another exciting week here in town. As of press time, the Scarborough High School baseball, softball and lacrosse teams are still in the playoff hunt, all participating in the Maine Class A Western Finals this week in their respective sports.

Congratulations on fantastic seasons by both the Scarborough High School boys’ tennis and girls’ lacrosse teams. Both teams were knocked out of the playoffs this past week, but it does not take away the fact that both teams had successful seasons. The boys’ tennis team finish with a record of 12-3, while the girls’ lacrosse team finish their season with a 9-4 record.

Youth baseball awards were presented this past week. Bud Sutyak was awarded the 2009 Peter Walsh Sr. Youth Baseball Coaching Award, given each year to recognize a “selfless” coach. Sutyak was nominated in 2008 by the late Dick Plummer, former Scarborough High School teacher and coach, who previously said Sutyak was deserving of the award because “he is someone who was involved when his son played ball here in the mid 1990s, but he stayed involved, coaching kids not his own, and just helping the town, and helping baseball.”

Sutyak, who has previously coached at Scarborough Middle School, is currently the head coach of the Scarborough High School junior varsity baseball team.

The 2009 Phillip T. Martin Youth Baseball Dedication Awards were also presented this week, given to baseball players at Scarborough Middle School. Matt Morrell was given the award for seventh grade, Sam Wessel for eighth grade as well as Max Christian and Brendan Ruel for the Developmental Team.

The award is named after Martin, a longtime Scarborough coach and member of the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame. It is given every year to recognize players who show dedication to their sport and their team.

Megan Murrell of the Maine Attraction threw out three base runners trying to steal during the game against Tewksbury Redman. Not just throughout the whole game, but in one inning. Tewksbury was so impressed they selected her the Most Valuable Player of the game. Good job, Megan.

Remember parents and coaches, if you have a player that you think deserves recognition, call staff writer Dave Dyer at 282-4337 ext. 219 or email news@scarboroughleader.com. Until then, see you next week.
