‘The Omnivore’s Dilemma’ at library

The Scarborough Public Library in partnership with Stacy Brenner of Broadturn Farm in Scarborough, will offer a two-part discussion of Michael Pollan’s book, “The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals.”

Using a unique blend of personal and investigative journalism, the book traces the origins of four meals, revealing what people unwittingly ingest and how taste for particular foods and flavors reflects on evolutionary inheritance.

Participants will read the book through June and into July, and then join Brenner on Thursday, July 9 and Thursday, July 23 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. to discuss Pollan’s look at “what we should have for dinner.”

Brenner will also host a visit to Broadturn Farm and the Scarborough Farmer’s Market as a way of carrying the discussion into practical environments.

Brenner and her husband, John Bliss, run Broadturn Farm as a Community Supported Agriculture farm raising organic vegetables, flowers, and pick your own strawberries, as well as poultry and natural lamb and pork. The property is in agricultural conservation with the Scarborough Land Conservation Trust.

This program is free and open to the public. Registration is requested by contacting the library at 883-4723 ext. 240.

The book is available through the library’s Minerva catalog. Information on purchasing the book at a discounted price will also be provided at the time of registration.
