Father donates to Project Graduation in memory of son

Graduation for the class of 2009 is approaching and it is a time of joy, reflection and anticipation for high school seniors and their families. On June 14, Project Graduation will provide a place for graduates to celebrate this important milestone with an eventful night of food, fellowship and fun activities. This chemical-free night is made possible through fundraising efforts of volunteers and generosity of people in the community.

The Project Graduation Team recently received a donation from Steve Campbell, father of Cooper Campbell who was killed in April 2008 as a result of a drunk driver. He donated $2,500 with a request that the Project Graduation committee establish a matching gift incentive that would encourage other parents and friends to become involved.

“The reasoning behind this gift is quite simple. Coop loved his friends and lived life to its fullest every day. Had he not been taken from us last spring, I’m sure he’d have been a frequent face at the athletic, social and community activities that make Scarborough such a special place,” Campbell said. “Cooper would be pleased to know that this contribution will foster support for a safe, upbeat, celebratory occasion for other kids. While his life was cut short, it’s my sincere hope that his friends and their families throughout Scarborough enjoy long, hearty lifetimes with each other.

“Live. Learn. Listen. Leap. Laugh. Love. Leave a mark. These were all words that meant a great deal to Coop. It’s my wish that this contribution spreads those words around in support of our youth, and as part of the legacy of a really, really great kid.”

The Project Graduation committee is appealing to SHS families to participate in collectively matching his donation. To donate contact Deb Chaloux at 885-0038.

Police get ATV patrol grant

The Scarborough Police Department has received a grant for ATV enforcement through the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

The grant will be part of a collaborative effort with the Old Orchard Beach Police Department to not only patrol the Eastern Trail in both communities, but to also patrol other off-road areas prone to ATV complaints. Patrols are currently scheduled at random times through the end of July.
