Class of 2009 top 10 percent (June 12, 2009)
Lauren Blaisdell is the daughter of Larry and Brenda Blaisdell. Lauren was a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, and the Saint Maximilian Kolbe Church Youth Ministry. Lauren will attend the University of New England in the fall.
Amy Buttarazzi is the daughter of Dr. Mark and Nancy Buttarazzi. Throughout her high school career Amy has participated in three sports, lettering in tennis, soccer and swimming. Amy will attend Springfield College as a recipient of the President’s Achiever Scholarship and will be enrolled in their six-year physical therapy program.
Jeremy Carter is the son of Kimberly and Dana Carter. Jeremy was the president of the class of 2009 and served as vice president of the class for three years before that. He will attend The George Washington University in the fall where he will major in political science and history.
Whitney Chamberlain is the daughter of John and Terri Chamberlain. Whitney is a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, and the Scarborough Community Scholarship Foundation. Whitney will attend the University of Maine at Orono in the fall to study environmental engineering.
Sam Chick is the son of Lee Chick and Lisa Letourneau. Sam was vice president of the senior class and the National Honor Society and was also a member of the student council, Interact Club and the Model United Nations Team. Sam will attend Bowdoin College in the fall.
Matt Couillard is the son of Richard and Mary Jane Couillard. Honors include National Honor Society, Speech and Debate State Champion, Academic Decathlon state runner-up, United States Academic Decathlon National Tournament. He will attend Johns Hopkins University to study international studies and economics.
Hanna Flewelling , salutatorian, is the daughter of Sandra Fussell and Andrew Flewelling. Hanna was an active member of the school music program, participating in the school Wind Ensemble, Concert Jazz Ensemble,and Jazz Combo. Hanna will attend the University of Southern Maine School of Music in the fall.
Brittany Gooch is the daughter of Mark and Michele Hallett. During her years of high school, Brittany participated in Teens Cooking Kitchen, Education For Employment and the Maine Special Olympics. Brittany will attend STRIVE University in the fall.
Spencer Heggers is the son of Arn and Sherry Heggers. Spencer was a member of the National Honor Society and received the Clarkson University High School Achievement award his junior year. Spencer will be attending Boston College in the fall on an Army ROTC scholarship.
Emily Houde is the daughter of Linda and Joseph Paquet and Brian and Irene Houde. Emily was a member of Jazz Band and Model UN team for all four years and a member of Key Club. She played basketball for two years as well. She will attend the University of Pennsylvania in the fall.
Chloe Kumpel is the daughter of Mark Kumpel and Helene Van Neste. Chloe was a counselor for the Maine Youth Leadership Program, a member of the Portland Youth Wind Ensemble, the National Honor Society, Key Club and both SHS Jazz Bands. Chloe will attend McGill University in the fall.
Tamara Labanowski, daughter of Brian and Jean Labanowski, has participated in the high school chorus and has played the violin in multiple ensembles, most recently performing with the Portland Youth Symphony Orchestra. Tamara will attend the University of Maine at Orono this fall.
Sophia Rose Lemire is the daughter of Ron and Christine Lemire. Sophia was president of her freshman and sophomore class, at Parker High School in Hawaii. Throughout her high school career she has been a member of the National Honor Society, Civil Rights, North Hawaii Youth Coalition, Amnesty International, Advisory, and Key Club. Sophia has been an avid participant in paddling, volleyball, theater and guitar. Sophia will attend Union College as a member of the Scholars program in the fall.
Caterina MacLean, valedictorian, is the daughter of Jean-Marie Caterina and Geoffrey MacLean. Involved in Academic Decathlon since her sophomore year, she has gone with Scarborough’s team to three national competitions and was top individual scorer in the state her junior and senior years and highest scorer from the state at the 2008 and 2009 nationals. Caterina plans to attend the University of Chicago in the fall, studying a mixture of political science, linguistics, and classics.
Erin McElwain is the daughter of Stephen and Lorraine McElwain. Erin was the secretary of the senior class and a member of the National Honor Society and Yearbook Committee. During all four years of high school, she ran cross country and indoor track as well as played lacrosse, serving as a captain for all three teams her senior year. Erin will be attending the University of Vermont in the fall where she plans to study biological science to enable her to eventually go into the medical field.
Jessica Mitchell is the daughter of David and Deborah Mitchell. She is the public relations officer in the Key Club and is a member of the National Honors Society, she participated in outdoor track and received the St. Michael’s Book Award. Jessica will attend Penn State in the fall where she will major in biology.
Katrijn Moulin is the daughter of Johan Moulin and Veerle Pottie. Katrijn was a honor and high honor student. During all four years of high school she participated in cross-country, indoor track and outdoor track. Katrijn will attend Bryant University in the fall, majoring in accounting.
Bradley Nakanishi is the son of Greg and Susan Nakanishi. He was the treasurer of Key Club, a class representative in the student council, a member of the National Honor Society, and a pianist in the Jazz Ensemble. During high school, he participated in cross-country and the track programs, serving as captain of the track programs since his sophomore year. Bradley will attend Tufts University in the fall.
Julie Passarelli is the daughter of Maureen and Joseph Passarelli. Julie was a member of Student Government, National Honor Society, Key Club, Math Team, and the band secretary. Julie participated in soccer, softball, and was a four year member of the swim team. Julie is a member of the Portland Youth Wind Ensemble and the Portland Youth Symphony Orchestra. Julie will attend Fairfield University where she will major in biology.
Ethan Rundell is the son of Helen and Jonathan Rundell. He is a black belt and participated in karate classes through all four years of high school and became an instructor during his senior year. He volunteered for the Maine Audubon Society for his last three years of high school. Ethan will attend Vassar College.
Joseph Servadio is the son of Lee and Audrey Servadio. Joseph was a member of the National Honor Society as well as the News section editor of the school newspaper. He has also been active in the band program playing tenor saxophone, participating in the jazz band and jazz combo. He was accepted into the district honors band for all four years, first chair for the last three. Joseph will attend the University of Delaware in the fall to study mathematics.
Meghan Summerson is the daughter of David and Sandra Summerson. She was also named to the SMAA All-Academic Team for cross country and track her senior year. Meghan will attend College of the Holy Cross as a biology and pre-medical major in the fall.
Peter Tuma is the son of Jane and Michal Tuma. Peter played on the football, basketball, and lacrosse teams all four years of high school, and was a captain of the varsity football team his senior year and received the Coach’s Award as well as Academic All-SMAA honors. Peter will attend Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts in the fall to study engineering.
Jenna Van Dam is the daughter of Jane and Brian Van Dam. She was secretary of the National Honor Society and a member of Key Club. In her junior year, Jenna received the Smith College Book Award in recognition of her leadership and academic achievements. She will attend Bentley University in Waltham, Massachusetts in the fall to study marketing.
Kelsey Webber is the daughter of Lynne and David Webber. During all four years, Kelsey was on the Scarborough High School volleyball team and is also a member of the Key Club where she has volunteered in many community events. Kelsey will attend Saint Joseph’s College in the fall where she will be a nursing major.
