The Marsh (June 5, 2009)

It’s always nice to see your local sports teams do well, but it’s even better when see your local sports teams do nice things for others. That’s why I was tickled pink (pun intended) when I saw the Scarborough High School softball team host a breast cancer awareness night Monday during its game against Portland.

During the game, signs hung from the stands giving statistics about breast cancer. Flyers and pink ribbons were passed out to fans, and on the field, players wore pink ribbons in their hair and pink wristbands on their arms. To top off the pink craze, all bases were painted pink.

Kudos to the team for their kind act. It reminds you that wins or losses in sports are not life and death situations in the grand scheme of life.

Speaking of softball, congrats to Catie “Funky Brewster” Funk, the Red Storm’s senior third baseman, as she smacked her fifth and sixth home runs of the season against Portland Monday night, smashing the record for most home runs in a single season, previously set at four. The record-breaking homer went over the line of cars behind the left center field wall and landed in the middle of the Wentworth Intermediate School parking lot. If I had it my way, the Boston Red Sox would replace David Ortiz with Funk immediately.

Good luck to the Red Storm girls’ track and field team as they compete in the Maine Class A Outdoor Track and Field Championship this week. The team is shooting for their fourth consecutive state championship. If that happens, I think we can officially put them with the great dynasties in sports. Just think about it: the Dallas Cowboys of the 1990s, the New England Patriots from 2001 to 2004, the New York Yankees of the 1920s, and the Scarborough Red Storm girls’ track and field team of the past four years. Doesn’t it have a good ring to it?

Also good luck to both the boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams and the baseball team as they begin the playoffs in the upcoming week.

More firsts in Scarborough Girls’ Little League this week. Mara McDonough of Heartwood Distributors had an unassisted triple play in a Minor’s Division game by catching a line drive, stepping on the bag and tagging the advancing runner.

Pitcher Lilly Volk of Volk Packaging struck out 17 batters in a 4-4 tie with Jones and Warren.

Amy Driscoll of Amatos had six put outs in her first Majors Division game. Hannah Ricker, Abbie Murrell and Kaleigh Scoville knocked their first hits for the Southern Maine Flame. Ricker and Chloe Gorey also made outstanding catches in a recent game.
