Many of the spring sports teams at Scarborough High School are looking forward to the post season as the regular season winds down.

As of press time, both boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams, as well as the baseball and softball teams are eligible for the playoffs. The girls’ track and field team have already enjoyed post season success, winning the Southwestern Maine Activities Association (SMAA) Outdoor Track and Field Championship last Saturday.

The Red Storm softball team has enjoyed a 14-1 regular season as of press time. According to the latest Maine Principals’ Association (MPA) standings, Scarborough would be the number one seeded team heading into the playoffs. The team is no strangers to the playoffs, as they made it to the Western Maine Final in last season’s playoffs before being knocked out by the Biddeford Tigers.

Head Coach Tom Griffin said his team is confident heading into the playoffs.

“We’re hoping our offense can carry us, but we’ve been in 1-0 types of games,” Griffin said. “I think we feel real confident in our lineup, one through nine.”

Griffin said this year’s playoffs will be especially difficult because of the number of quality teams playing in the postseason.

“There’s a lot of good teams this year,” Griffin said. “There are six or seven teams that could be difficult.”

The baseball team has enjoyed an improved season from last year, going from eight wins last year to twelve this season. In the latest MPA standings, the Red Storm are ranked third in Western Class A, behind the Deering Rams and the Westbrook Blue Blazes.

Senior third baseman Ian Ramsdell said he thinks the team has a good chance at winning a state championship.

“I think we have a great chance this year,” Ramsdell said. “I don’t think teams show us a lot of respect, but we’ll get some recognition.”

As of press time, the girls’ lacrosse team had an 8-3 record, and were the fifth seeded team in Western Class A in the latest MPA standings. The team is also no strangers to playoffs, making it to the Western Maine Final the past three years in a row, and losing the past two. Head Coach Marcia Wood said she hopes the team will make it to the state finals, because she’s tired of losing in the Western Maine Final.

“I think being in the Western Maine Final the past three years and losing the last two will fuel them,” Wood said. “I just hope they can get past that and remember what it felt like to lose.”

The boys’ lacrosse team is continuing their previous success this season, as they are the number two-ranked team in Western Class A in the MPA standings. The Red Storm have won two state championships in the past three years.

In a Scarborough Leader interview by Stephen Ham, senior Jake Barrett said he would like to finish his career a winner.

“We’d like to win a third championship in high school,” Barrett said.

The girls’ track and field team will be looking to continue their dynasty tomorrow at the Maine Class A Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Thornton Academy in Saco. They have won three consecutive state championships and will be shooting for their fourth in a row.

Head Coach Ron Kelly said he expects to have trouble against Edward Little High School during tomorrow’s state championship meet.

“We’re in a position we want to be in,” Kelly said. “We’re going to keep our fingers crossed that some other teams will help us in [events] we can’t control.”

Kelly said he is not concerned with winning a fourth straight championship.

“I don’t do it for the glory,” Kelly said. “I do it for the kids. For them to do well, I feel good. You got to keep an even keel, because there were times we weren’t winning.”
