Welcome back to the Marsh. Congratulations must go out to both the Scarborough High School boys’ and girls’ track and field teams, as both had strong performances at the Southern Maine Activities Association (SMAA) Cumberland County Championship meet last Friday.
The girls’ team won the meet in dominating fashion, scoring 173.5 points, 51.5 points higher than second place finisher Cheverus High School. Christy Manning led the Red Storm with three first place finishes (javelin, shot put and discus), while Abby Chick (400-meter dash), Nicole Kirk (200-meter dash) and Emilia Scheemaker (long jump and triple jump) also placed first. The team also finished first in the 4 by 800-meter relay and the 4 by 100-meter relay.
The boys’ track and field team came a close second to Cheverus, scoring 109.5 points to the Stags’ 120 points. First place finishers for the Red Storm were Sam Chick (300-meter hurdles and the triple jump) and Nate Hathaway (800-meter run). The team also finished first in the 4 by 400-meter relay.
Both teams will try to continue their success tomorrow at the SMAA Championship meet, on home turf at the high school, with a starting time of 9 a.m.
As of May 21, Chris Bernard of the Scarborough High School baseball team not only had an undefeated 5-0 pitching record, but the future University of Maine Black Bear was also leading the SMAA in hitting with a .640 batting average and in home runs with three.
More firsts this week in Scarborough Girls’ Little League. Madison O’Reilly of Volk Packaging got her first major league hit. Erin Ryan of the Southern Maine Flame got her first hit, an RBI single.
Plenty of events are coming up in the area soon. Tryouts for the Southern Maine Kids Travel Baseball League will take place tomorrow between 4 and 6:30 p.m. for children ages 7 to 12 years old. Interested players must first register for the tryout by contacting Dan Warren at 799-9793 or by email at dwarren@jwlawfirm.com.
Tryouts will also take place this Sunday at 5 p.m. at Bonny Eagle High School for players either interested in playing for the Scarborough Junior Legion (ages 14 to 16) baseball team or Senior Legion (ages 17 to 19) baseball team. There will also be another set of tryouts for both team to be hosted at Scarborough High School June 7 at 5 p.m. Players are required to bring their original birth certificate, along with cleats and a glove to the tryout. For more information, contact Dan Warren.
The Scarborough High School girl’s lacrosse team will host their alumni game June 4 at the high school beginning at 5:30 p.m. Players are asked to wear white shirts, dark shorts, goggles and a mouth guard.
Also, anyone who’s craving pizza and wanting to help out the Red Storm softball team can stop over at Pat’s Pizza on Route 1 June 2. Pat’s will donate 15 percent of all orders (excluding alcohol) during the day to the team.
Random thought of the week; as high school graduation is only days away, I’m reminded that this is my five-year anniversary of my own graduation from Massabesic High School.
Man, I’m getting old.
