Scoring goals, all around (May 22, 2009)

Scarborough High School junior Ellie Morin has scored goals in bunches this year for the girls’ lacrosse team.

So many in fact, that by the time you finish reading this article, she may have added even more to her impressive season total.

Morin, a midfielder for the Red Storm, has scored 32 goals in eight games so far this season, helping Scarborough to a 5-3 record.

Morin said this has been her break-out year for goals, as her first two years on the team involved more passing.

“My freshman and sophomore years I played on varsity and I had more assists,” she said.

Morin said the Red Storm have played well so far this season, especially under the new lacrosse tiering system, which divides teams up within Class A, making Scarborough play against teams such as Wayneflete and North Yarmouth Academy, whom the Red Storm does not usually play.

“We’re playing a lot harder teams,” Morin said. “But it’s getting us ready for the playoffs. We’re playing well.”

Morin said the Red Storm are working hard to get to the Maine Class A state championship game this season, as Scarborough has lost the Class A Western Maine final the past two years in a row.

“[Losing the Western Maine final] my first year was awful,” she said. “I’m very competitive. If I don’t win, I put it all on me. I think our team is very confident, which I think helps. I think we’ll get to the state game this year.”

Morin said the team has taken a one-game-at-a-time approach to the season, focusing on the upcoming team they play against instead of focusing on specific teams they want to play against later in the schedule. She said each team plays differently, and the Red Storm have to plan for each opponent accordingly.

Morin said the team is looking forward to playing Kennebunk next Friday, as they beat Scarborough in last year’s western Maine final.

“That’s going to be a huge game,” Morin said.

Morin said she hasn’t changed anything in regard to training to help explain her break out season.

“I jog, but I’m already kind of athletic,” Morin said. “It’s weird, but I don’t have to train as much. I practice a lot of things, like different tricks and shots.”

Morin said she also plays for the Seacoast United, a girls’ lacrosse team based in New Hampshire that plays in regional lacrosse tournaments. Morin also has been selected to play for the Upper New England team at the Women’s Division National Tournament in Maryland this weekend. Morin’s team will compete with 54 other teams from around the country.

Morin said she began her love of lacrosse at a young age, playing in youth leagues. She said because of her skill level, she ended up playing with older girls while she played sports growing up.

Morin is not the first athlete in her family. She said her mom Nancy was once an All-American field hockey player at the University of Maine at Orono. Morin also plays field hockey in the fall for Scarborough.

Morin said her mom is the calming influence in the family in regards to sports compared to her dad Peter.

“Winning is nothing to her, but it’s everything to my dad,” Morin said. “It balances itself out.”

Off the field, Morin said she enjoys spending time at the beach with her friends.

“When summer comes around I explore,” she said. “I think having fun and being with friends is a huge part of life.”

Morin said she would like to play lacrosse in college. She said if she gets recruited to a Division I lacrosse school, she will only focus on lacrosse, but if she attends a Division III school, she will try to play both lacrosse and field hockey.

Morin said she is unsure what she wants to major in during college, but said she would like to work with either children or animals in the future.
