Sports Shorts (May 8, 2009)
The Scarborough High School Boys’ track team defeated Thornton Academy, Portland High School, and Noble High School during their first meet of the season April 29 in Scarborough.
Among the Red Storm’s first place finishers for the Red Storm were: Sam Chick (triple jump, 300-meter hurdles and 110-meter hurdles), Scott McFarland (1,600-meter race walk), Nate Hathaway (1,600-meter run), Conor Sullivan (400-meter dash), Craig Robinson (800-meter run), Ross Thomas (high jump), Eddie Manning (javelin) and Brad Nakanishi (pole vault).
The Red Storm also placed first in the 4 by 400-meter relay. Scarborough had 134 points, Thornton Academy finished second with 84 points, Noble in third place with 42 points and Portland in fourth place with 26 points.
The team’s next meet will be 3:45 p.m. today at the Westbrook High School Track.
Girls’ track wins second meet
The Scarborough High School Girls’ Track team defeated Bonny Eagle High School, South Portland High School and Kennebunk High School Monday in South Portland.
Among the first place finishers for the Red Storm were: Emilia Scheemaker (long jump, triple jump), Jenny Snyder (100-meter hurdles), Christy Manning (discus, shot put, javelin) Rachelle Green (100-meter dash, 200-meter run), Abby Chick (400-meter dash) and Whitney Chamberlain (800-meter run).
The Red Storm also placed first in the 4 by 400-meter relay. Scarborough scored 150 points, while Bonny Eagle finished second 60 points, South Portland in third with 44 points and Kennebunk finishing fourth with 25 points.
The team’s next meet is scheduled for 3:45 p.m. today in Scarborough.
Girls’ lacrosse stuns Stags with win
Ellie Morin scored seven goals and had one assist as the Scarborough High School Girls’ Lacrosse team defeated the Cheverus Stags May 1 by a score of 14-10.
Brittany Ross added three goals for the Red Storm, while Lindsay Hagerman and Chelsea Barrett also contributed with two goals apiece.
Emily Van Duzer, Mary Dempsey, Bethany Schleh and Grace Fitzpatrick each had two goals for Cheverus. Scarborough’s next game is scheduled for 6 p.m. May 11 at home versus Marshwood High School.
Scarborough Little League Scores
Onorato run gives Aero extra-innings win
Nico Onorato scored the winning run for Aero in extra innings as Aero defeated Al’s Variety 9-8. Jack Vincent had two home runs, while Garrett McDonald added a grand slam to give Al’s Variety a quick 6-0 lead, but Aero came back in the later innings with runs by Jack Hughes and Sean McGovern in the ninth to tie the game at 8 apiece before Onorato scored to give Aero the victory.
Ian Cory struck out seven batters for Aero, while McDonald also struck out seven for Al’s Variety.
Pitching duel goes Lions way
Matt Gedaro and Sam Warren each recorded 10 strikeouts in four innings of work for their respective teams, however, J.T. DeGrinney, Sam Warren, Nick Frizzle and Bradley Rockey drove in three runs in the fourth inning for the Lions to give them the win.
Cornerstone scored their lone run in the fourth inning when Matt Caron hit a double to score John Timpson.
