Letter: Project Grad. 2009 (March 6, 2009)
I am writing to encourage support of this year’s Project Graduation. In 1979, 12 high school teenagers were killed in alcohol related auto deaths during the graduation season. In an effort to avert further tragic losses, Project Graduation was founded throughout the state of Maine, and Scarborough High School is a participant.
There is a committee of parents, and other volunteers who work together from October through June, to plan this free event for the graduating seniors. The student participation approaches 100 percent, and an overnight extravaganza at Howard’s Sports Facility in Saco. The seniors spend the night there, with supervision, and are in a wonderful safe zone. This continues to be a great success. Additionally, the Project Graduation Committee hosts an annual senior breakfast the first day of school, and the committee provides a personalized photo of each graduating senior, as they receive their diplomas on graduation day. Project Graduation is a non-profit organization, and 100 percent dependent upon community donations.
I had the pleasure of supporting Project Graduation 2008 with a monetary donation. Nancy and I took time to visit the annual auction event at the high school cafeteria, and we were very pleasantly surprised. It was an energetic, fun, free food galore event and we saw many supportive community adults, who were lending a hand. But most rewarding, was the opportunity to meet, encourage, and speak with the high school seniors. It was very enlightening, and these are wonderful young people.
This year’s event is from 5 to 9 p.m., March 21, at the high school cafeteria. The Theme is “A Night at the Movies,” and many graduating seniors will be present. We will be attending again, and writing a check again, and would appreciate if you would kindly consider helping.
