The results are in, and the recipient of this year’s Scarborough Leader “Great Person Award” is resident Eddie Woodin, nominated by his friend Sam Kelley.
“I had no idea,” Woodin said of his nomination. “All of a sudden I was reading about it in the Leader and I had a friend who reads the Leader online call me and tell me I was in the running. Looks like we got the word out.”
Kelley said he met Woodin two years ago through his involvement with the Project G.R.A.C.E. organization.
“I had seen a few mentions of him in the paper but had no prior experience with him,” Kelley said. “He has been very generous to Project G.R.A.C.E., and I was always touched that he was of the mindset that he was going to give away everything before he died.”
Woodin also helped the 350th celebration this summer by purchasing all of the fireworks, Kelley said. His philanthropist efforts don’t stop at the local level, Kelley said, as Woodin has donated funds to programs in Africa as well.
“He’s been extremely generous to all kinds of causes,” Kelley said.
Woodin shares his beliefs as much as he does his wealth, as Kelly said he is the “most religious guy” he has ever met.
“I’ve always been impressed with people who have such faith,” Kelley said.
