Drew Campbell: ‘Kicking butt’ as Student of the Year (Dec. 26, 2008)

Second degree black belt Drew Campbell, 14, and her father Andy Campbell, a third degree black belt, practice their moves at the Dragon Fire Martial Arts center in Scarborough. Andy Campbell said he was afraid other students would think he was “playing favorites” when he awarded his daughter with this year’s “Student of the Year” award, but all agreed with his decision.
“Everybody came up and said ‘You made the right choice, she’s one hard worker,’” he said.
The “Student of the Year” award means more than having the right moves in the dojo, however, as Andy Campbell said he looks into students’ grades at school and how they get along with their families before making his decision.
“Martial arts is physically challenging, but school is just a pain,” Drew Campbell said.
In addition to sticking up for ostracized students at her school, Andy Campbell said his daughter has a sense of humor that keeps everyone around her smiling.
Drew Campbell, who has been training since she was 3 years old, said she enjoys joking about her abilities with her friends at school.
“They ask if I can kick their butt and I say ‘Yeah, basically,’” she said with a laugh. “It’s fun and you learn how to protect yourself, and a lot of other stuff. It’s different.”
