Scarborough Town Clerk Tody Justice said she had received an official request for a recount of the vote concerning the Scarborough Village proposal for a racino last Friday. The paperwork was accompanied by $3,100 Scarborough Village partners provided to cover various fees associated with the recount, she said.

“The last day we can do it is Dec. 2, and we’re looking at doing it then,” Justice said. “It will take us all day.”

Scarborough Village legal counsel Ed MacColl said the decision to proceed with the recount was one example of the devotion Scarborough Downs owner Sharon Terry has to the harness racing industry.

“Mrs. Terry’s been forthcoming with the fact and events have proven her commitment,” he said. “I’m sure she’ll do whatever has to be done to preserve the industry.”

MacColl said most studies of the harness racing industry lead him to believe that harness racing needs to be linked with other forms of gaming to remain a viable business. When asked if the Scarborough Village Partners were possibly looking into relocating to another municipality more likely to approve a project similar to the Scarborough Village, MacColl said he was sure Terry would “find the best solution” for the industry.
