Letter: Mistake voting down racino (Nov. 21, 2008)
Editor:
A little more than half the voters in Scarborough voted against the racino. I wonder how that vote would have gone if the governor had announced $150 million in budget cuts before the election.
I don’t think turning away a project of that size was a good idea. Much is made of development on Haigis Parkway. Fairchild will come to town. Will there be a net gain in jobs? The office staff is moving from South Portland – new jobs in the area – I don’t think so. The other projects on Haigis will employ people, the racino had the potential to employ many more.
Property tax from Haigis Parkway – a plus for the town. The potential revenue from Scarborough Downs – gone.
I know that there are a lot of people who are immune from the pink slip in this town. Many are not. I also know that a lot of people have had an unpleasant experience in the stock market. After our newly elected officials finish congratulating themselves, and they decide how to build a $35 million-plus school, I’d like them to check the town tax revenue stream. Maybe look at the interest rate on a bond issue, if we have ‘to go it alone.”
I’m worried, I’m nervous, if the rest of you aren’t – you don’t read enough!
