Letter: Encourage children to practice bicycle safety (Oct. 31, 2008)

Editor:

On Friday, Oct. 24, I almost hit a little girl on her bicycle with my car.  I was turning right from Sawyer Road onto Route 114. She was wearing no helmet and riding against traffic, and I didn’t see her until the very last minute.  I hate to think of what would have happened if I hadn’t seen her. If parents are going to buy bicycles for their kids it is imperative that they ensure that their kids know the rules of riding a bicycle, especially on a road like Route 114.  I know that when I was a kid  in northern Maine we had what we called bicycle rodeos.  These were safety seminars put on by the local Kiwanis where the emphasis was on safety and the rules of the road regarding a bicycle. I don’t know if they have them here in Scarborough, but it might be worth looking into. Route 114 is a busy road and it is important that kids be careful when riding their bikes on this road.  My hope is that this letter prompts parents to talk to their kids about bicycle safety and the dangers of not following the rules.
