Top three issues: (in order of priority)
1. Taxes/town finances
2. Seniors
3. Town growth
In your own words, why are you seeking elected office?
I am running again because I know I can be effective in advocating for the tax payers of this town whether they are seniors, working families or young people; no matter what level of income. I am proud of my past record where I lead the charge to implement a circuit breaker program for seniors, worked with the regional towns and cities to develop a regional crime lab and most importantly served as chairman of the finance committee which we were again able to keep the tax increase under 3 per cent. And at the same time we were also able to provide the additional police officers and fire fighters which were desperately needed to enhance the safety of our town. I think we are facing some difficult times ahead which I feel my experience and leadership and most importantly common sense will be an asset to the town as we move forward. I have always prided myself in being readily available and open to citizens and their concerns and have been able to, in most cases, resolve many issues with a positive outcome. I will continue to listen to the citizens, work hard, and utilize my experience and common sense in making our town a terrific place to live, work and play.

I have received awards from Maine’s Coastweek program and the Greater Portland Council of Government’s Commute Another Way Day. I was nominated for volunteer of the year by the National Federation of Community Broadcasters and was also nominated by the city of Saco for the Paul Janson Conservation Award.
Top three issues: (in order of priority)
1. The economic health and sustainability of Scarborough without the racino and with attention to the quality and quantity of development
2. The future of Scarborough - our children and schools
3. Government transparency and inclusiveness where voters and residents are a highly respected part of the process
In your own words, why are you seeking elected office?
As the national economy continues to decline, we look increasingly toward our local economies to create a buffer between us and what’s happening in the rest of the country. While we are hearing more and more about eating locally and supporting local businesses, in the context of turning toward the local we often forget the importance of local government. Wandering through Scarborough’s new farmer’s market last month, I realized that with my unique pairing of skills and experience, I could contribute to my community in a meaningful way as a member of the town council.
To keep any organization running well there needs to be a flow of new, creative ideas and energies from a diversity of people. Communication is vital in the relationship between citizenry and government. It is often forgotten that government is the servant of the people, and open, transparent communication that includes listening is critical. Having served nonprofits for over 15 years and the country in the USMC for 4 years, I bring a unique perspective to the council. I am a highly skilled, mature communicator with accomplished listening skills. I am also an extremely practiced collaborator having brought many organizations and people together to work on a variety of projects.
I’ve visited over 1,000 homes in Scarborough so far in addition to meeting with town administrators and small business owners to listen and learn. If I haven’t visited your home or business, I encourage you to visit my website (www.KarenForScarborough.com). I look forward to serving you on the council.

Top three issues: (in order of priority)
1. Maintaining financial stability during this economic crisis.
2. Balancing the economic pressure for new business development with social concerns associated with a racino.
3. Educational planning for an alternative to a new intermediate school.
In your own words, why are you seeking elected office?
Like many of you, I have lived and will raise my family in this community. I know firsthand the unique lifestyle, issues, and challenges that face our way of life. For this reason I know I can provide experienced leadership to the town council. In seeking another term on the town council, I am motivated by ideas about a better way to organize our community, by faith in certain values or ideals, and the desire to fight for those ideas and turn them into workable solutions.
I am one of those people who consider their term in political office as an expression of responsibility and duty toward the whole community. I know I am fortunate to have the support of many in Scarborough. I believe I’ve gained that through hard work, commonsense and a strong commitment to the values we share while serving on the school board and two terms on the town council.
I am proud of my record of achievement over the last eight years, but there is much more I want to accomplish. Whether it is building a better business community, continued land use planning, ensuring stronger financial management strategies or effective regional leadership, we must have a Town Council that helps us solve our problems, not create new ones.
No matter how challenging the issue the reward was knowing that we did our best to find working solutions that improved our lives and our community. You’ve had an enormous impact on my life, and I promise you the same commitment, the same energy and the same level of effort that I provided during my first seven years of service.

2. Traffic and Public Safety
3. Schools and Education
In your own words, why are you seeking elected office?
I am running for Scarborough Town Council because I feel that it is important that our elected officials represent the wishes of the citizens. I feel that it is time for a change and that I would be honored and consider it a privilege if the people of Scarborough would allow me to represent them. I want to be the voice of the people and when something is brought before the council I will be the one that makes sure that all of our citizens know what is going on and allow them to have open conversation with me about if they feel an issue would be in their best interest to move on or not. People have told me that they don’t feel that our current leadership is listening to their wishes and doing what they want. A perfect example of this is the Black Point Park that was voted down, but we are still spending the money that was bonded for the area even though the majority of our citizens advised us that they did not want this project to be done. I think that we should have immediately started paying back the bond once the people voted and not moved any further on this initiative as that would be the only option as the money had to be used specifically for this purpose and could not be used for other initiatives. I truly believe that the money we spend in our town belongs to our citizens and we need to be fiscally responsible on how we spend i. I want to continue the high standards of education that have been present in Scarborough over the years and make sure that if we have safety issues at the schools that we address them and remedy them in a timely fashion. I can be contacted at lcrocke4@maine.rr.com or by phone at 885-0129, and I would ask for you vote for change to elect me in the upcoming November elections.

Top three issues: (in order of priority)
1. Listen to the citizens of Scarborough
2. Family wellbeing
3. Possible future property tax increases
In your own words, why are you seeking elected office?
It is very simple for me, we all of a choice, we are either part of a problem/issue or can become part of a solution to a problem/issue. If you speak out about the problem yet take no action, you become part of the problem or issue. However if you speak out and take action or offer solutions on problems/issues you then have the opportunity to become part of the solution.
Since returning to Scarborough in October of 2006 a significant number of residents have express their feeling that town leaders are not listening or care about citizen well being here in Scarborough. As one of many examples, in the fall of 2006 and spring of 2007 my neighborhood wanted to place a small portable foot bridge across a small brook on the discounted part of the Dunstan Landing Road in order to gain access to the Eastern Trail without having to be subject to unsafe and high speed traffic on Route Nine/PinePoint Road. All we were looking for was permission to use a private funded foot bridge. Both the Town Manager and Town Planner are unwilling to address this simple request despite the enormous safety benefit to pedestrian traffic in our neighborhood. Another example is starting construction/building a portion proposed park off the Black Point Road after being rejected by the citizens of Scarborough.
Here is my simple pledge, I will put aside my own personal feeling and biases and listen to every single citizen who would like to express their feeling and constructive thoughts on any issue or problem. If elected and have the privilege of being a representative of Scarborough Town Council, I pledge to use the following decision frame work and process on all issues or problems presented to the council. I will explore all the positive and negative effects on the following criteria;
The effect on health and wellbeing of all citizens and visitors of Scarborough Maine
The effect on health and welfare of our environment
The effect on Scarborough schools and education curriculum
The effect on health and welfare of town employees
The effect on Scarborough infrastructures
The effect on Scarborough fix assets
In closing, it is time to get back to the basics of listening to citizens of Scarborough and understand their needs and concerns while balancing fiscal responsibility for majority
