Letter: Names do matter Nov. 4 (Oct. 17, 2008)
Editor:
After much controversy the issue of the Scarborough High School mascot is now before the voters. On No. 4 Scarborough voters have the opportunity to vote to change the mascot’s name as part of the official ballot municipal election section.
Nonbinding Referendum Question Nov. 1 on the municipal ballot reads:
This is a nonbinding question asking, “Do you favor changing the current Scarborough High School mascot name?”
Many residents have voiced their displeasure with the process which took place several years ago that changed their mascot’s name, which to them has no meaning, does not create unity or enthusiasm. Many people have stated “What is Red Storm?” “What does the physical Red Storm mascot look like?” The old mascot was symbolized, both on the outside of the High School and in the old gymnasium. It was a sad day when it was removed from the side of the building. We wonder where the symbolic head dress that was used at all our rallies, that used to be part of the trophy case in the main entrance went?
Some top school officials have stated publicly that this issue is unimportant, not a priority, and a waste of time.
For all the residents who encouraged and supported us to have this issue brought before the voters, this is your opportunity to tell these school officials, “This is an important issue.”
It’s time for the voters to be heard.
We encourage everyone to vote yes on question No. 1 on the referendum to change the present mascot name Tuesday, Nov. 4.
