Letter: Project is opportunity for Scarborough (Oct. 3, 2008)

Editor:

The biggest election question this year will be to change the zoning ordinance that will allow slot machines at Scarborough Downs.  I believe this is a tremendous opportunity for the town of Scarborough.  I have lived here since 2001 and have loved every minute of it.  Scarborough is a wonderful town made up of wonderful people.

We have an opportunity to enhance the town by allowing slot machines at Scarborough Downs.  The track is conveniently located right off the expressway so traffic should not be an issue.

In addition to slot machines, Scarborough Downs is going to develop more than 200 acres of land to further better the town.  We desperately need a community center and this will allow the private sector to fund the infrastructure necessary for such a project.  This downtown village will add character to an already great town.

I believe we can use Bangor as a model.  Hollywood Slots has generated millions for Bangor and has had limited impact on the city as a whole.  The same will happen here.  We as a town look to make millions of dollars.  This will ease the burden many seniors who are living on a fixed income face with increasing property taxes.

A community center would only increase our quality of life, as it would give school age children a place to regularly exercise during the long, cold winter months.  A senior center would also give our seniors a place to gather and socialize.

Out of town corporations have consistently provided jobs and paid taxes in Scarborough.  Wal-Mart’s corporate office is located out of state, as is Cabela’s.  Hannaford and Shaw’s are companies whose parent’s corporations are located out of the country.  They still provide jobs for hundreds of people and serve to better the community.

Scarborough Downs is looking to do the same.  The slot machines will bring many new jobs and revenues to the town.  The Scarborough Village will enhance the image of Scarborough and will also create jobs for many people as well as increase the corporate taxes paid to the town.

I support this development and the slot machines 100 percent.  This is a great opportunity for Scarborough to increase revenues, create jobs and develop a downtown area that will enhance our sense of community.  We are a wonderful town with beautiful beaches, great schools and wonderful people.  Let’s build on this.  Let’s get the slots and all the benefits they bring.
