Letter: Cover photo shows poor judgement (July 11, 2008)

[Editor’s note: The following letter is in response to the special section, “Scarborough 350th Anniversary,” published with the June 27 edition of the Scarborough Leader.]

Editor:
I recently reviewed a copy of the “Scarborough 350th Anniversary” and was horrified when I saw what you had chosen to put on the cover. Obviously the people who had chosen this cover did not bother to see the horrific physical condition these poor horses were in. These horses were very clearly emaciated and looked like they could barely stand, but were made to pull this heavy coach with all those stupid people aboard. In those days, we had no “humane” laws, but today, this would be called severe animal neglect and cruelty.
In the future, I would strongly urge you to seriously consider what you put on and in your publications and show respect for all the creatures past and present.
