Wal-Mart construction slowed by sinking foundation (July 3, 2008)

Scarborough town officials have a rising feeling construction of the proposed Wal-Mart Supercenter in the Scarborough Gallery development could begin soon.
The project is long overdue to get off the ground due to an extended “pre-loading” process to prevent the foundation for the 212,000 square foot building from sinking out of site, Town Planner Dan Bacon said.
“It sunk almost three feet when they were expecting about six or seven inches,” he said. “It’s taking a lot longer than anticipated.”
According to an email from Wal-Mart spokesperson Philip Serghini, the store is scheduled to open “by late spring of 2009.”
“Construction times are often a little loose,” he wrote.
Bacon said he expected crews to begin significant construction on the building soon in order to keep the building permit active.
“Once the foundation is set it should go up quick,” Town Manager Ron Owens said. “It’s moving forward.”
