Letter: Patriotic observance ignored by students (July 3, 2008)
Editor:
[The following is a letter to the Scarborough High School superintendent and the Scarborough Board of Education]
When the National Anthem is being played at a Red Sox game, did you ever notice that the players faced the flag, stood still, and held their right hand over their heart?
Do the Scarborough school teams do that?
No, no, no, never. Yes, they do stand at attention and face the flag, but never, ever place their hand over their heart.
Section 954 of the National Defense Authorization Act, Section 9 of Title 4 states: “…all other persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over their heart, or, if applicable, remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at their left shoulder, their hand being over their heart.”
I hope that you have not decided, in your pursuit of “political correctness,” that this patriotic observance should be ignored because some student who hates the United States would be offended!
