Red Storm rages: Scarborough lacrosse can’t be stopped (June 6, 2008)

Watch out. Here they come.
If this week’s games are any indication, the Scarborough boys lacrosse team may hear these words whispered frequently by the rest of the league.
The Red Storm have turned up the heat on the competition, and the results this past week were two wins in two games, 13 to 2 versus Freeport, and 14 to 6 versus Falmouth.
Scarborough led from start to finish against Freeport, with Jake Barrett scoring five times and Brendan Ham adding three more, plus an assist.
Against a scrappy and determined Falmouth team, however, things didn’t start out on a high note. The Red Storm came out flat-footed and quickly found themselves in a 2 to 0 hole.
Scarborough coach Joe Hezlep said, “The boys weren’t focused in the first quarter. They just didn’t show up to play, and Falmouth did.”
That was clear, when Chris Kipp scored to cut the Yachtsmen lead to 2 to 1 midway through the first, Falmouth immediately answered, scoring 18 seconds later to go up 3 to 1.
Wait just a second! This wasn’t supposed to happen. Scarborough came into the game on a roll, and figured to be a big winner, but this was Falmouth, and the Yachtsmen always play the Red Storm tough.
Fortunately for Scarborough, help arrived in the form of senior leadership. Mark Strait, Darren Smith, Ben Fink, and goalie Joe Kennedy provided steady play on defense, shutting down the Yachtsmen, who would not score again until late in the third quarter when the game was totally in hand.
Senior captains Chris Kipp and Ryan Hunt then stepped up to lead the offensive assault on Falmouth that saw the Red Storm put up 12 consecutive goals. Kipp was red hot and scored four times, while Hunt added three goals in the game, and together they gave the Storm the spark they needed. Eric Ornstein added a late goal as well to help seal the victory.
After the game Hezlep was clear that his team has to do better early in games.
“We learned that if we don’t come to play against any team, they can take it to us. We’ve got to figure out a way to take care of the first half,” he said. “Today was the flattest we’ve come out all year.”
The good news for this game was Scarborough had enough talent and maturity to weather the first quarter.
“Fortunately we had Chris Kipp feeling it today,” Hezlep said with a smile. “He was really hot all day.”
And so are the Red Storm, just in time for the playoffs. Two games are left in the regular season, one against always tough Deering, and one this afternoon Friday at 4 p.m. against a Cheverus team that has already hung a loss on Scarborough.
That’s OK though. The Storm are hot and moving up in the Heal point rankings. And that sound whispering through the leaves at night? It might be saying, “Here they come.
