Letter: Let’s use common sense here (May 30, 2008)

Editor:
After reading Mr. Billings letter in the May 16 issue of the Scarborough Leader I would like to make a few comments.
I am a retired fisherman born on the river’s edge of Pine Point 79 years ago and still live there with my wife of 60 years.     During my fishing career and my wife’s many years at the Canning Co. we hoped for a retirement free of financial burdens.
But, as most seniors on fixed incomes know the high cost of everything has eaten into our savings, which cannot be replaced.
Instead of building a senior center as suggested by Mr. Billings, the best thing the town can do for the majority of seniors is to hold the line on their spending and focus on holding property taxes down.
The town manager and department heads of Scarborough are all in the higher pay scale bracket and do not realize the financial burden their spending has on the  many poor families and seniors who are trying to hold onto their homes.
While other towns and cities are trying to cut back on spending, Scarborough does business as usual, spend more.
