Letter: Saturday, May 17 is a day for kids (May 16, 2008)

Editor:
On Saturday, May 17 we will be hosting our fourth annual Kid’s Day International event at the Scarborough High School.
Kid’s Day is a special day in our community dedicated to kid’s health, safety and environmental awareness. Each year Kid’s Day has grown exponentially and is now nothing short of being an absolutely huge community event that you shouldn’t miss.
This event also serves another purpose; it provides an opportunity to raise a significant amount of money that in the past has been donated to the Scarborough Dare program and the Scarborough Primary PTO. This year we have chosen The Dream Factory of Maine as a very special recipient to receive the proceeds from Kid’s Day. The Dream Factory of Maine is dedicated to granting dreams to Maine children with chronic and critical illnesses. More than ever, we are asking the community to get behind this event to help make it a success. With a little effort from each of us, we can help a dream come true for a child who is suffering while increasing health and safety in our own community.
I would like to publicly acknowledge and thank all of the participants who donate their services, skills and knowledge on this day with the unified purpose of making our community a healthier and safer place to live. There are dozens of professionals, businesses and individuals that donate their time and money towards this event and they should be commended for their dedication towards this cause. I would ask everyone to make note of our sponsors as well as the dozens of volunteers who help make it possible.
Most of all, I want extend my heartfelt appreciation to the dedicated team in my office. This one day takes literally months to prepare and organize. The process for this year’s event started back in November and quickly evolved into a daily task list by the middle of February. This day exists because of the work of April Cayer, Cindy Paquet, Nathalie Paquet, Dr. Kelley Pendleton, and Dr. Mike Rementer. They worked countless hours, many times through their lunch breaks and after office hours to make sure everything got done. Without ever complaining, they would make phone calls, ask for donations, create fliers, coordinate logistics between dozens of vendors, write hundreds of letters and emails, and recruit volunteers. I’m very proud to be associated with such a naturally giving group of people and I appreciate each of them.
This year’s Kid’s Day promises to be the biggest and best ever, be sure to mark Saturday, May 17 on your calendar!
