Letter: Taxes should be going down (Printed April 25, 2008)
Editor:
Scarborough is certainly growing. Drive on Payne road or Route 1 and one sees clear evidence between all the construction and the multiple stop lights that have gone in all over.
With all this increase in commercial construction, as well as Scarborough’s population increasing by 4,000 since 2000, our property taxes should be going down, not up.
How much has tax revenue increased since 2000?
The increased commercial construction does not put a drain on our schools but does provide a tremendous increase in tax revenue. The population increase does not all relate to direct increase in school expenditures.
Scarborough has enough infrastructure – schools, police building, fire stations, library, etc. The tax base increase from all the commercial construction – Cabela’s, Haigis Pkwy – should more than pay for the increase payroll needed for six EMT and two police officers.
I know my salary doesn’t go up 5 to 6 percent each year. Does yours? It is time for the residents of Scarborough and Maine to say NO to any new taxes.
