Letter: Celebrate National Library Week (Printed April 11, 2008)
Editor:
From April 13 to 19, schools, campuses and communities across the country will celebrate National Library Week – a time to remind the public about the contribution libraries, librarians and library workers make to their communities everyday.
The question “Are public libraries still relevant?” can be answered in one word. Absolutely! The current economy has contributed to an increase in library use nationwide, and our community is no exception in reflecting this trend. The Scarborough Public Library has become the “go to” place for free and open access to information that connects people to each other and to what the world is talking about.
In late March, the library converted to the Minerva Catalog system, which requires that all library users apply for a new library card. In the three weeks following our launch, over 2,300 residents registered for a new card. Are we relevant in our community? This overwhelming response certainly confirms that we are.
Consider these benefits our library offers to all residents, businesses and employees in Scarborough – for free:
A catalog system that offers cardholders entry to a state-wide consortium of libraries offering over six million lending materials; literacy support through Early Literacy Stations and weekly story times for children; public computers and wifi access that link people to job opportunities, information on emerging business trends, hobbies, or world events; information on programs, services and activities provided by Scarborough agencies and organizations; programs offered in partnership with area businesses and professional organizations on best practices needed to compete locally and globally; and trained librarians available to help our users find the perfect book, resource, or interpret information.
I invite every resident in our community and every employee of a Scarborough business to visit the Scarborough Public Library during National Library Week. Register for your free library card and discover why libraries still matter. Join the circle of knowledge at your library!
