Letter: Ms. Batty makes a visit to students (Printed March 28, 2008)
Editor:
It started out as a normal Tuesday afternoon for the fourth grade literature club meeting after school on March 18. The club meets in Wentworth Intermediate School (Scarborough)’s library. The group was discussing the book they are reading, Bernie Magruder & The Bats in The Belfry by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. Suddenly, a tall black bat flew into the library! It was none other than Ms. Batty the world-renowned bat expert (aka principal, Anne-Mayre Dexter)! Ms. Batty first tested the club members bat knowledge by having them complete a short true-false quiz. Cleverly, Ms. Batty engaged the members by reading the Eyewitness book entitled Amazing Bats-rather than giving the students the answers to the quiz. The students had to listen for the answers – as well as try and figure out what kind of bat Ms. Batty is. Ms. Batty kept the club members entertained. The group all agrees that Ms. Batty’s visit was “AWESOME” and that they all learned more facts about bats. The club is co-advised by school librarians Sandy Doehler and Sue Nakanishi.
