It took Scarborough police just under three minutes to apprehend 35-year-old Gary Courage of Saco after he allegedly robbed several hundred dollars from Len Libby’s candy store on Route One last Thursday.

Officer Rick Rouse said they received the robbery call from Len Libby Candies at 9:42 a.m. and a subsequent call from a neighbor who heard about the robbery on a police scanner.

Rouse said the neighbor witnessed the alleged robber run down a hill to the nearby Irving gas station, where he drove off in a 1999 Subaru.

Based on neighbors’ information, Officer Shawn Anastasoff identified and pulled over the Subaru Courage was driving on the Haigis Parkway not far from the toll booth for I-95, Rouse said.

According to police, the gun used in the alleged robbery – which Rouse said was later identified as a pellet gun – and the stolen money were recovered during Courage’s arrest.

Scarborough Police Chief Robert Moulton said the incident was an example of dispatchers, police and concerned citizens “all coming together.”

While Scarborough hasn’t experienced many robberies in the past, Moulton said they are becoming more frequent.

“It’s a sign of the times, it certainly has been going on all around us,” he said.

Courage was charged with robbery and was admitted to the Cumberland County Jail where he was awaiting $13,000 bail at press time Wednesday.
