Chairs were a hard to find commodity at Sunday’s Democratic caucus, which was delayed an hour due to the large number of people who showed up to register. Neil Jamieson, who was elected Caucus chairman said more than 700 people attended, resulting in 401 votes for Barack Obama and 283 for Hillary Clinton.
Sean Peter Flaherty, a Scarborough resident and representative for the Obama campaign, said he was glad to be back in his hometown to see such a large amount of support for the Democratic party. Flaherty spoke on behalf of Obama at the caucus, whom he equated to John Kennedy.
Tracey Najarian was one of several 17-year-olds to attend the caucus, and said she had already enrolled with the Democratic party, which would enable her to cast her vote at the caucus. She and her mother, Kim Najarian said they were both looking forward to hearing the representative for the Obama campaign.
“It’s an awesome thing to see this many people here,” 57-year-old Brad White, a Scarborough resident since 1986 said, and also compared Obama with past president Kennedy.
Scarborough residents Anne Billings, 82, and Betty Livingston, 87, both said they joined the Democratic party after leaving the Republicans. The pair said they attended to see what Obama’s representative had to say at the event. Scarborough joined the rest of the state in its support for Obama. According to results on the Maine Democratic Party Web site, he won 15 Maine delegates and Clinton received nine. A record 44,887 Mainers attended caucuses on Sunday, also according to the Web site.
