Get wet: Annual Polar Dip this Sat. (Printed Feb. 8, 2008)

The fourth annual Polar Dip will be from 1 to 2  p.m. Saturday (Feb. 9) at Pine Point beach. The event is hosted by the Scarborough High School Key club, and proceeds from dippers will be used to purchase an ark from Heifer International.
The ark the club hopes to purchase costs $5,000 and according to the Heifer International Web site, will include 15 pairs of various livestock. Families that are given the animals will agree to pass on any offspring to other families in need.
The dip is one of the largest events that the group hosts, club president Paul Chiarantona said. In the past the dip has benefited tsunami relief efforts and Guidelines for Resuscitation And Care at End-of-Life, known better as Project G.R.A.C.E.
Torrie Hazelwood, vice president of the Key Club decided on Heifer International since it was an international cause as opposed to a local one.
“We try to alternate between local and international charities,” Chiarantona said.
“It’s not like just giving money,” Hazelwood said. “I personally like the idea that it doesn’t just stop, it will be affecting people down the road.”
Chiarantona said this year the event has many corporate sponsors from the local community.
“We have a huge list that we’re still working on,” he said. “And we’re working with Sanford, South Portland and Deering schools and businesses this year.”
Businesses may make a single donation or agree to participate in the “Dip Dollars” which is based on a set amount per participant.
