The votes are in for the Scarborough Leader’s 2007 Great Person Award.
“I didn’t want to win!” a modest Bernadette Meserve said when she heard the news.
Meserve has been a Scarborough resident since 1950. Dorothy Carter, also a Scarborough resident, nominated her for the Great Person Award. They met through their time spent together at the Scarborough Veterans’ Home, where they both volunteer.
Carter was excited, although not surprised to hear that her friend had come out on top of this year’s Great Person election, she said.
“There just wasn’t enough room on the nomination card for me to write what a great person she is.” Carter said.
Meserve started her volunteer work in 1996 and continues to spend her time at the Scarborough Veterans’ Home, long after the passing of her husband, who was a resident there for some time. Every Sunday Meserve can be found volunteering at the home, and every Tuesday during the summer as well.
Meserve has known the Scarborough Veterans’ Home from many vantage points. According to Jan Brennick, the Activities Supervisor and Volunteer Coordinator for the Scarborough Veterans’ Home, Meserve’s time as a volunteer, a family member of a resident, and even a resident herself, helps her perform vital functions for the organization.
In addition to lending a helping hand in all aspects the veterans’ home, she conducts surveys of the current residents.
“They know they can talk to her.” Brennick said. “She’s just marvelous.”
During her twelve years of volunteer work Meserve has contributed much more than her individual efforts, as she often recruits her fellow churchgoers to lend a hand.
“I bet she’s brought in twenty volunteers over the years.” Brennick estimates.
“That award couldn’t go to a better person.” Said Kathy Sparda of St. Maximilian Church on Black Point Road, where Meserve attends service.
In addition to offering her time to help others, Meserve has touched those around her with her positive and youthful attitude, a quality that Sparda continues to notice.
“She is a wonderful model for aging.” Sparda commented.
Congratulations and thanks to Meserve, one of eight outstanding Scarborough residents nominated for the award in 2007. In addition to being featured in next week’s Scarborough Leader, Meserve will receive a commemoratory plaque.
